Not only Hollywood stars love this beauty gadget

Dermatologists and cosmetic studios have been successfully offering light therapy as a skin treatment for several decades. However, Hollywood stars are raving about the LED masks and influencers are showcasing the products on their channels.

If you believe the full-bodied promises of the advertising  then LED masks are true miracle weapons: Anti-ageing boosters that are also able to regenerate UV damage to the skin, ensure an even complexion, combat acne and impurities and even improve the appearance of scars. Good LED masks range in price from 350 to 850 euros, but there are also more expensive models that cost up to 2400 euros. Choosing the best mask depends on your needs, your price range and your preferences. Ideally, you should also be able to test the mask before you buy to see whether the model in question harmonises comfortably with your face shape.

None other than NASA was the first to discover the positive properties of LEDs. They used LED lights to stimulate plant growth. In the meantime, this technology has spread to many skin clinics around the world. LED technology then quickly found its way into beauty salons and the market for LED masks at home has also been booming for several years.LED masks contain approx. 100 or more Light Emitting Diodes = LEDs, depending on the model. The masks are simply placed on the face and the light emitting diodes illuminate the face without actually touching it. The energy released creates an electrical voltage signal that acts in different layers of the skin depending on the wavelength of the light. The LED masks have different light colours (red, blue, green, oink, yellow and white) that can penetrate up to ten millimetres into the epidermis. There they stimulate the cells to produce new and endogenous collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. The LED masks for home use have a significantly lower light intensity than the professional devices used by dermatologists and in beauty salons.

With a wavelength of 550 to 640 nanometres, red light penetrates deepest into the skin. The main area of application for red light is therefore the tightening of the skin. It is therefore not only suitable for mature skin, but can also be used preventively by younger users. Blue light, with its significantly shorter wavelength of just 400 to 450 nanometres compared to red light, acts directly on the skin’s surface. It has a calming and disinfecting effect and is therefore ideal for combating blemishes, pimples and acne. The manufacturers of LED masks recommend yellow, white and pink light to combat age and pigmentation spots. Pink-coloured light is also said to have a detox-like effect on the skin. Green light has a wavelength of around 525 nanometres and is said to stimulate lymph flow. Green light, like white light, is also said to have a relaxing effect on the user’s psyche.

So far, only the effect of red and blue light has been scientifically proven. However, this does not mean that the other light colours do not have a positive effect. This has simply not yet been sufficiently proven by scientific studies. Optimum skin care with individually customised serums, day/night and eye creams as well as exfoliation is still the basis. In addition, LED masks are a good tool that is worth investing in. Regular use of the LED mask (two to three times a week for 20 minutes) can result in healthier and firmer skin.
